Alton Towers

So, the great Alton Towers adventure is all over. It ws over far too quickly in my opinion. But I did enjoy it immensely.
Thursday involved getting up far too early for most people's tastes and bombing in up to Staffordshire. Charlene, Pete and Joe's sister Amy slept in the back most of the way. The car proved that while it doesn't like slow speeds and travels up hills like a fat otaku, it takes motorways like the bitch they are. Stopped off in the services on the way up, where Marcus gave me a brithday flower. Asked him where he knicked it from, and it turned out he'd stollen it from the vase in the toilets...
Arrived at the park at just after 10 on thursday morning. Collected everyone except
almosthonest and
roadkillgerbil, who were a bit lost. Waited for the monorail and went yaah alot. Investigated various rides once in the park.
Teacups - Spinning lesbian apocolypse for all, says Hobbit. Obligatory first ride.
River Rapids - Seemed less wet to me. Maybe we just need Matt the Hat for full effects.
Log Flume - Now baths instead of logs, and with the addition of the mocking duck in the last tunnel. We also know how to get the most splash ut of this ride. Sorry Cat!
Air - Not so much a white knuckle rollercoaster as some of the others, but definitely one of the more interesting ones.
Nemesis - My favourite. Has an inverted loop the loop. I think I did permanent damage to people's hearing by screaming on this. Sorry Mili-chan.
Oblivion - This makes me sick just watching it. Other people seem to enjoy. Freaks.
Hex - Interesting part walk-though horror story, part optical illution. Defeated by Hobbit and a bottle of coke on a string.
Charlie and the Chocolate factory - meh, really. Probably cos it's aimed at small children. Although the great glass elevator bit is not for peole with vertigo.
Pirate ship - Had to be done by all pirates. Marcus was made to sit at the end. He didn't look happy.
Ripsaw - They weren't using the fountains as they didn't have any more fresh water, so wasn't nearly as good.
Spinball wizzer - New twist on the standard rollercoaster. Instead of having a train of cars, each car fits 4 people and goes round on its own. Each car also moves 360 degrees relative to its wheels. So, not only are you wizzing round the track, but also round and round anyway.
Corkscrew - Traditional rollercoaster, definitely showing its age.
Ug swinger - I hate you all. 'Nough said.
Rita, Queen of Speed - Has been down for large parts of the summer, apparently. We did get a go on friday. Most rollercoasters pull you up to a certain hight and then drop you to get speed. Rita accellerates you using high powered magnets. Its exactly like being fired out of a rail gun. When they take the photo, you've been moving for 2.5 seconds. At this point you are doing 100mph. Its very fast. I wasn't sure I liked it.
Went out for a meal on thurday evening to a nice hotel that did very resonable priced food, the sort of things you used to get at the Royal Oak. One table was very intellectual and talked about books and politics, while the other talked about larp. This was until they noticed Amy sitting with them, so in order to entertain her, Hobbit constructed a fectional life for the pair of them. I belive they were married, had a kid, which then drowned adn now Amy is filing for devorce or similar.
Friday was back to the park. Unfortuately the tail end of a hurricane meant that the afternoon was very, very wet. We did the water rides, as we weren't going to get any wetter. Me, Mili-chan and Marcus then went off and spent the last half hour of the day doing Nemesis, the front seat of Air, and then the Front seat of Nemesis. Nemesis in particular felt very fast on the last couple of goes. I don't know if it was the rain, or if they just cranked it up.
Then it was all over. Joe got us home safely, adn then we slept. Lots.
So, people who went:
Favourite ride, any quotes that need writing down and will you go again?

Date: 2006-09-25 07:34 pm (UTC)Quotes: The Marcus Quote, and possibly a "I hate you all you bastards" from Cat in the tunnel of the Log Flume
Will I go again - Definitely. Dori may not however. She enjoyed the first day, but was knackered for the second day so didn't enjoy it as much as parks like that involve vast amounts of walkage.
